What happened
- HIBP found about 4.9 million unique email addresses (names, phone numbers, physical addresses) plus about 85,000 internal employee-directory records with job titles. Charter said “only sales tools used to manage current, past and prospective Business customers were impacted” and “no CPNI or sensitive PI was released by the threat actor.” ShinyHunters claims 42 million Salesforce records including some CPNI, which Charter disputes.
- Root cause as claimed by ShinyHunters: voice phishing that compromised an employee’s Microsoft Entra account on 1 Apr 2026, then Salesforce. Charter has not described the vector.
- ShinyHunters claimed it and published the data after Charter refused to pay.
- No notification count confirmed by Charter at time of reporting.
