What happened
- Per The 74, a phishing email “late last month” impersonated “the state education agency or a widely used payment platform” and “tried to obtain vendors’ banking information”; the state notified vendors on 25 Sep. “It’s unclear how many vendors actually clicked on the deceptive link.”
- Root cause per the state: phishing of education providers; vendors were told to reset email and “the ClassWallet platform” passwords.
- No attacker named.
- The department and ClassWallet “temporarily locked down the system to conduct a ‘risk assessment,’” blocking vendor payments and parents’ access; state spokeswoman Christy Cox said the full scope will not be known until verification is complete.
