What happened
- The FEC’s electronic filing system went offline around 22:00 ET on 26 Oct 2026, a week before the 3 Nov midterms. Filing search, report validation tools and FEC Notify were down; an FEC status message on 27 Oct said the issue “has been identified and a fix is being implemented”. Konbriefing logged the outage at about 41 hours (not confirmed by the FEC).
- Root cause: Reuters, citing an internal email, reported an attempted breach that forced the FEC to “temporarily shut down” web-facing services; the FEC has not said whether anyone got in or whether data was taken.
- Attacker: not identified.
- Response: services being restored; CISA and FBI referred questions to the FEC. The FEC does not run elections, so vote casting was not affected.
