CVE-2026-73666: OpenChoreo: Unauthenticated Backstage developer-portal API exposes OpenChoreo catalog data, scaffolder logs, and allows unauthenticated catalog write/delete

Advisory generated from the CVE record, CISA, Exploit Observer and VEDAS: what it is, whether it is exploited, who is affected, and how to fix and detect it.

Generated by VEDAS. Scores as of 2026-11-01 19:19 UTC. Rebuilt every few hours from cve-scores, CISA KEV and vedas-signatures. How this works and its limits.

What it is

OpenChoreo is a developer platform for Kubernetes. Prior to 1.0.4, 1.1.4, and 1.2.1, the OpenChoreo Backstage backend hardcoded backend.auth.dangerouslyDisableDefaultAuthPolicy and auth.providers.guest.dangerouslyAllowOutsideDevelopment to true, exposing /api/* without authentication and allowing unauthenticated catalog reads, scaffolder log reads, and catalog location creation or deletion. This issue is fixed in versions 1.0.4, 1.1.4, and 1.2.1.

Description quoted from the CVE record (assigned by GitHub_M, published 2026-08-13).

Weakness: CWE-306: Missing Authentication for Critical Function

How it can be exploited

Exploitable over the network with low attack complexity needing no privileges and no user interaction. Impact: confidentiality high, integrity low, availability none. CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:L/A:N

CISA assessment (SSVC): CISA has no evidence of exploitation. Automatable: yes. Technical impact: partial.

OpenChoreo - Unauthenticated Backstage Catalog API Access

OpenChoreo before 1.0.4, 1.1.4 and 1.2.1 ships a Backstage backend that hardcodes backend.auth.dangerouslyDisableDefaultAuthPolicy and the guest provider’s dangerouslyAllowOutsideDevelopment to true, exposing /api/* without authentication. An unauthenticated attacker can read the software catalog, scaffolder logs and create or delete catalog locations. This template confirms the flaw non-destructively by reading the Backstage catalog entities endpoint without any credentials.

Name and description quoted from the template, written by VEDAS.

The template sends 1 request (GET /api/catalog/entities); it decides using status, word matchers. Severity in the template: high. Marked as not yet verified against a live vulnerable target.

Run it against a host you own or are authorised to test:
