CVE-2026-75601: Static Web Server: Authentication bypass on /metrics endpoint when --basic-auth is enabled

Advisory generated from the CVE record, CISA, Exploit Observer and VEDAS: what it is, whether it is exploited, who is affected, and how to fix and detect it.

Generated by VEDAS. Scores as of 2026-11-01 19:19 UTC. Rebuilt every few hours from cve-scores, CISA KEV and vedas-signatures. How this works and its limits.

What it is

Static Web Server (SWS) is a production-ready web server suitable for static web files or assets. Through 2.43.0, instances with both basic-auth and metrics features enabled process the /metrics endpoint before the basic-auth check in src/handler.rs, allowing an unauthenticated remote attacker to retrieve Prometheus metrics that disclose virtual host names, request volumes, error rates, latency distributions, and active connections. This issue is fixed in version 2.44.0.

Description quoted from the CVE record (assigned by GitHub_M, published 2026-08-26).

Weakness: CWE-306: Missing Authentication for Critical Function

How it can be exploited

Exploitable over the network with low attack complexity needing no privileges and a user must take an action. Impact: confidentiality low, integrity none, availability none. CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N

CISA assessment (SSVC): CISA assesses that a public proof of concept exists. Automatable: no. Technical impact: partial.

Nuclei template (active check)

Static Web Server (SWS) - Unauthenticated Metrics Disclosure

Static Web Server (SWS) through 2.43.0, when both the basic-auth and metrics features are enabled, processes the /metrics endpoint before the basic-auth check in src/handler.rs. An unauthenticated remote attacker can retrieve the Prometheus metrics, disclosing virtual host names, request volumes, error rates, latency distributions and active connection counts. Fixed in 2.44.0, which enforces authentication first.

Name and description quoted from the template, written by VEDAS.

The template sends 1 request (GET /metrics); it decides using dsl matchers. Severity in the template: medium. Marked as not yet verified against a live vulnerable target.

Run it against a host you own or are authorised to test:

bash
nuclei -u https://your-host -t CVE-2026-75601.yaml
